Dear Friends of Indigena,
On our family trip to the Arctic in 2018, we met young Matthew Flaherty, a precocious artist who began carving at the age of 18. Carving wolves and foxes, Matthew soon made a name for himself . At age 20, he moved to Kinngait, where he apprenticed under his grandfather, master carver Etulu Etidloie. Matthew’s great-grandfather is Robert Flaherty, best known for creating the first feature length documentary in 1922, Nanook of the North (click here to view the entire film).

When we were leaving Kinngait and Iqaluit, Matthew came to the airport with a beautifully carved serpentine owl (at left, obviously, now sold)!
We’ve continued to follow Matthew’s artistic development, his progressive creativity so beautifully demonstrated in his carvings. Keenly interested in wildlife, Matthew’s foxes, wolves, and bears manifest a fluidity of movement and sleek detail.
Now, with the assistance of Dorset Fine Arts, Gallery Indigena presents Matthew’s first solo exhibition of carvings in serpentine and Arctic marble, a few selected drawings, and one of his available prints.
