ALLAN SHEUTIAPIK
Cultural Group:
Birth Date:
Birthplace: Iqaluit, Nunavut
Allan is one of the younger carvers born and living in Iqaluit. Iqaluit is the former Frobisher Bay and now the Capital of the Territory of Nunavut, Baffin Island. Alan has been carving since he was a child, inspired by other relatives and artists
who engage in carving to make a living. Like many Inuit carvers, his favourite subject is the Polar Bear, carved dancing,
walking or diving! The artist carefully chooses his stone, (serpentine) and works with the grain of the stone to enhance his carvings. His subject matter includes a strong preference for animals, which he carves in gentle, fluid forms including everything from dancing bears to walking caribou in all shades of serpentine. Being a very active carver, he has been featured in a number of collections across North America. He continues to carve full-time and has been consistently gaining recognition in the international market. In 2006, Allan won a carving award for BEST MOVEMENT in Ice sculpture at
the Toonik Time Festival held yearly in Iqaluit. Whether in ice or stone, each of Allanโs carvings exhibit fine carving skill and excellent movement.
