Tom Whonnock (b. 1955, Alert Bay, BC) is a respected Kwakwakaʼwakw (Northwest Coast) Indigenous carver renowned for his mastery of traditional cedar carving and formline design.
He is a descendant of the Kwakwakaʼwakw nation, Tom holds ancestral crests—most notably the Sisiutl and Thunderbird.
He started carving at age 16. He honed his skills under Carrier artist Larry Rosso and guidance from his grandfather, Godfrey Hunt.
He specializes in cedar masks, halibut bowls, talking sticks, plaques, and totemic items featuring iconic animals like eagles, ravens, and wolves.
He creates ceremonial masks used in traditional potlatch performances, continuing cultural practices tied to specific family and lineage rights.
His pieces are sought after by collectors, featured in art galleries across BC, and have commanded high prices at prominent auctions.
