David Louis was born in 1969. Over the course of 20 years, he developed his own style, drawing influence from carvers such as William Watts, Dave Nahanee, Edmund Williams, Darren Lewis, and Peter Charlie.
Louis was also heavily influenced by his father’s style of carving and copied it over the years. David's mother is Squamish and his father is Musqueam. David loves carving plaques, masks, and totem poles.

He lives on the Musqueam reserve in Coast Salish territory. He is a longhouse dancer and speaks his language. He received two names: a Musqueam name, Gush-tane-m, and a Kwaguilth name, Numigalas.
