Richard Shorty was born Southern Tutchone in Whitehorse, Yukon. A self taught artist, Richard was raised in Whitehorse, Yukon wherehis love of art first started. He began his career as a graphic artist after moving to Vancouver in 1978.

Richard Shorty’s unique style has a heavy influence of both traditional and contemporary designs and shows his versatility as an artist. Having worked on drums, paddles, mask, bentwood boxes and rattles over his career, as well as paintings. Richard’s work is well loved and respected and collected nationwide.

He started his career [painting portraits, wildlife and scenic realism. He now lives in Vancouver, British Columbia. Richard has been an artist since 1965. With his artistic abilities maturing, in 1980, he began to work on drawing native designs, enabling him to create a new dimension in native art, showing traditional motifs with realistic flair. Richard creates killer whales, wolves, salmon and eagles.

His first print edition was released in 1987 with an enthusiastic response. “The “Night Owl”, “Big Catch”, “Alert Owl”, “Hummingbird” and “Salmon” followed as print editions.
