Cody Mathias grew up on the Capilano Reserve in North Vancouver. He spent his childhood watching his father and grandfather carve totem poles in their backyard. He began carving wood at age ten and started selling his work at age fifteen.
In February 2008, he graduated from the Northwest Coast Jewelry Arts Program at the Native Education College in Vancouver. The program was led by Kwakwaka'wakw/Haida artist Dan Wallace.
