TIM PEE

Cultural Group:

Birth Date:

Birthplace: Kinngait, Nunavut

Tim Pee was born in 1976 in Kinngait (formerly Cape Dorset), a community located in the south-west portion of Baffin Island in Canada’s high Arctic, territory of Nunavut. Tim is one of the more talented carvers in the region. He carves full time and
specializes in prowling, walking, standing, and dancing polar bears. He chooses to carve in serpentine, which ranges in colour from light yellow to green to black. Serpentinite is a soft stone so that the artist can carve fluid outlines and polish to an
elegant finish. As Inuit artists are mainly self-taught, they have their own technique and style. Tim’s work is no exception. His carvings are recognizable by the lightly etched eyes on his polar bears and the remarkable sense of balance and movement. His smaller pieces are delicate and finely carved.
